Note: I know I went way over the word limit but it's because of the entrance I wanted to do special and once you read you'll understand why so I apologize ahead of time.
A switch is flipped on and a movie reel begins to play on an empty wall. Memories and moments play as a man maybe not known around the world to the professional wrestling world but to those within local areas knew him as a friend, trainer, mentor, and a lot more. His name, David Kerr but within the ropes he went by Dynamite Dave Deuce or later as The Amazing Velvet. Still images appear of his time standing next to big names within this industry and as the pictures change, visions of up-and-coming talent that also have made names throughout the independent scene are noticed. And then as clips began to play of his work from promos and his in-ring craft, it started to sink in. You’re probably asking well, why does this concern The Dynasty? Because of this…[an image shows Dave with Sinclair] here the two are signing over the rights to the name, The Dynasty.
Now The Dynasty has a whole new purpose for when they step into the ring because they’re not just making sure that The Dynasty is on top of EPW but it’s now making certain that the legacy that Dynasty Dave left behind is heard to everyone if you care to or not. That’s the life he lived in the ring, The Dynasty stands for dominance and that’s what Dave was about especially in different places he wrestled as he ran his group, The Kingdom. Yeah sure it was a Christian based company Dave was in but he impacted everyone from Indy to pro so when it came time for Danger to take place in a city where Dave competed with some of his close friends although he lived and breathed Minnesota Vikings, Richmond, Virginia was one of those places. Being a man all about universities it was a nice touch that this live Danger would take place on the campus of The Stuart C Siegel Center on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.
Inside one of the sky boxes in the upper level seating inside the arena are The Dynasty ahead of the night’s live Danger broadcast and they’re speaking with EPW’s own Gerald Giles. With the view of the ring and empty seats behind them, the first of the group to speak is Paul Sinclair.
[Sinclair] “Coming here tonight, we talked about it and tried to come up with what does tonight mean? Yeah, it’s about Gary Hardin and it sucks not having Dark Tiger here with us anymore because he was a guy you wanted around you in the locker room. It didn’t matter if the cameras were around or not, you got Gary so it’ll suck not seeing that ugly mug around here but he’s not gone. He’s got a front row seat watching us. But you know something, tonight is dedicated to him but for us, The Dynasty, we’ve got someone else we’re dedicating tonight to. (In the background Blake and the tag team champions Tama and AJ are trying to keep themselves together). We didn’t want to make a big deal of it to management but us, tonight, we’re dedicating what we do to our mentor and friend Dave Kerr. He lost his fight to Cancer (Blake picks up a metal folding chair and throws it at the wall just as Paul lowers his head to choke back tears while AJ wraps his arms around Blake to calm him down). I…I can’t right now. Tonight, (pointing to the name Velvet printed on a black armband) is for you”.
Paul gets up from his chair and is out of camera view as AJ looks like he’s about to take a seat but then Tama and Blake walk behind him and look out towards the ring. AJ sits down and looks at the camera.
[AJ] “Jmont, you’re no Whistler (Larry Zbyszko reference) so to say you’re a living legend, more like an old relic because legends don’t do what you did. Legends are already in a league of their own but you wanted to think you’re a Fleihr (Ric Flair reference) because you pulled a dirty move by coming in from the crowd and helped your sister win. Now because of that, here you both are in a handicap match against us but really I don’t even think we need that because of what you did, you pissed off the one guy that nobody in this company wants to piss off but and the mindset that Blake is in tonight with us dealing with our friend, you two won’t make it off this campus without help”.
Tama walks over towards AJ and he gets up as Tama takes a seat.
[Tama] “Look, I was just talking with Blake and man is he pissed. Between crying and everything going on, I know EPW isn’t ready for tonight. Jmont and Vmont, tonight that ring is going to be covered in your blood and it’s nothing with me or AJ but the way Blake is feeling, we’ll try to keep him in check but right now, he wouldn’t care if he killed you in that ring tonight. He’d smile and walk out like nothing happened but tonight I will promise you that your blood will be on our hands.
Not only is tonight a tribute show to a fallen comrade but it’s also a reflection on the life of someone that was dear to us and I’m not even talking about the reason EPW is doing this thing. You heard Paul say it, I don’t think AJ knew him that well but Blake, he’s taking it hard because I just found out that…I’m not sure if he wants me to say this but we were eating and Dave’s wife called and said he was in the hospital so Blake left and went to be there. I’ll tell you that right now his mind isn’t here and that’s bad for tonight because no telling what he’ll do. He could flip on anybody and we’ve seen it.
But enough talking, I’ve got to finish getting ready so talk to Blake”.
Hearing his name, Blake walks over and embraces Tama with a hug and as it appears the hug gets tighter, sobbing can be heard just before a clearing of the throat and the two end their embrace. Blake takes a seat and his face looks red in color as he had been crying. He doesn’t look at the camera but glances at it periodically throughout his speaking.
[B. Anderson] “With the intention tonight to get back at both Jmont and Vmont, it’s also a night to celebrate a fallen friend in the ring (he starts to get choked up) and dammit Dark Tiger, Gary, whatever you knew him by, he'll be missed. If there was an EPW Hall of Fame he’d be right there. But tonight isn’t just about him. See, we lost another guy who this one hit hard (he again gets choked up) and this guy wa….was my mentor,, my trainer. He’s the guy who without him there would be no Blake Anderson or any of the names I went by going up and down the circuit with until I made it to the big lights. Dave (he throws his head back) whew! Fuck man! Dave, you gave this kid a break and you stuck your neck out for me time after time and when I fucked up, you taught me tough love and that’s exactly who I am today.
See, Dave wasn’t just a guy who liked to cut up. Yeah he had his gimmick The Amazing Velvet where he’d come out dressed in all pink and have this gay gimmick where he’d find the married couple in the crowd and would look at the wife but then wink at the husband. (He slightly cracks a smile). This idiot would show up at the arena early and go into catering and pick out the biggest tray they had and bring it to the locker room so when I get there, there’s this huge tray of food and he’d be like ‘you have to eat it all or catering will be pissed that you don’t like their food’. Come to find out he stole the tray so catering is looking for it so here I am with a sandwich or whatever it was in my hand and I’m eating it walking down the hallway and I’m getting looks from people like they’re pissed at me then I’d go do my usual promo and after when I’m watching it back, I get a tap on my shoulder saying a tray of food was found in my room. I go yeah Dave brought it to me and said it’s from catering. Then I find out that you know how at weddings you have those tiers that have food on each layer? He took a whole layer and brought that to the room so say if there were three layers, now there’s only two. And I mean it’s catering so there’s a good bit on the tray so yeah, he’d do things like that or I remember this one time we were on a flight to an overseas show and I’ve got my seat laid back and he’s next to me and he says I snore. I don’t think I do but then again I’m sleeping so I don’t know”.
AJ and Tama quickly speak up, “you’re damn right you snore”. They laugh as Blake continues.
[B. Anderson] (laughing) Gee thanks guys. Anyway, you know how you can feel someone looking at you? I wake up and look over and with a smile and him batting his eyes like he’s this girl trying to seduce a man, he doesn’t miss a beat and says ‘you were sleeping so I didn’t want to wake you but did you know you’re cute when you sleep’. Man, I jumped up from my seat about the time the stewardess was coming by and knocked her over and the drinks on her cart went everywhere and probably got on Paul who was on the opposite side of me….”
Paul speaks up, “yeah I got drinks on me plus the stewardess was in my lap”.
[B. Anderson] “And while all this was going on what is Dave doing? Not a damn thing except laughing his head off and then he looks at me and this guy stayed in character to where you didn’t know if he was really gay or he just played it really good. He’d look at me and go ‘no reason to get all wet just because of me’ which you couldn’t help but smile and laugh because he’d say it in that type of voice like here’s this guy who’s married and has four kids, a daughter and three boys but wears pink and would do anything to get you to laugh and have fun. You’d never know he was hurting because he always smiled and was more worried about you than how he was.
He had this rocker mentality and when Joan Jett’s ‘I Hate Myself For Loving You’ would blare over the speakers, man, it was like the arena would get on their feet and cheer him no matter if he was a face or heel at the time. He’d be that guy in the ring if you’re teaming with him or against him that you knew you were going to have a safe match but a great dance because you were in there with not just a friend and brother but a veteran who respected this sport from the littlest detail. I’d watch him help setup chairs or just something with the ring crew and everyone would tell him ‘oh I’ve got it’, no, he’d say ‘you’re never too old to pay your dues’.
So yeah, tonight’s for him and every time I step in the ring is for him because without him I wouldn’t be here. Without him Paul wouldn’t be here. There’s a brotherhood that people don’t talk about because it’s hush because guys on both sides are in it. Speaking of brotherhood, I also found out that Kevin Sullivan died. Man 2024 has sucked so far. I remember he booked a few shows I was on at conventions and festivals and where some would think it would be hectic with everybody we had on the roster, he made it look easy with his compartmentalizing and just his mind and an eye for seeing the little things that usually end up turning into big ideas.
Now you’re probably asking yourself why did I bring them up, well, since you’re stupid and don’t understand then I’ll explain it to you. When you go back and read the tagline that management put with this match, whoever wrote it knew exactly what to say because this match is orchestrated to teach these two a lesson and whatever ‘mont’ cousin’s that wants to come out and be in the spotlight. So to say that we’re calculated and devious or whatever words you want to use to describe us, go ahead and use them because it’s all true and when the night is over you can add winner and we can add you to the list of names that have gotten in our way and we put in the hospital because of it”.
[Sinclair] “Blake, hold on, before you finish let me say something. I was talking with Tama and AJ and you know that the V twins Vermont and Vagina are looking at this if they win then they’ll get a tag title shot”.
[B. Anderson] “Paul, if they win is right but look, I told Tama and AJ this would happen and that would be just like me if I had a title, if someone wants a match then all they have to do is ask. After tonight, there probably won’t be anything left of them for AJ and Tama to defend the titles against but if they survive after tonight, it’s a possibility”.
Tama makes his way back over and AJ follows but Tama motions to “hold on” so Tama faces the camera.
[Tama] “Blake, no, you’re right. It’s a possibility but look at this, if somehow a miracle happens and they make it out of tonight, when they do come after our titles we’ll break them in half then. That is whenever they get cleared after what we do to them tonight. See, tonight isn’t just about sending a message to them but to everyone who dares step up to us and wanting a shot at our tag team titles. We declared these titles to be ours and we’ll defend them anytime anywhere so you hear that management? See, unlike your other champions, we’ll actually defend our titles every time Danger opens its doors. But see, we’re not going to just let anyone challenge us. See, we’re going to do things differently because before each match, we’re going to have whoever the opponent signs a waiver because we won’t be responsible for what happens to them once that bell rings.
See, you made the mistake of allowing us to get away with no rules and well, we’re going to adopt that and that’s our demand. If you want a match against us for the tag team championship then you’ll meet those demands and sign a contract or a waiver stating that we’re not held liable for anything that we do to your bodies because while you may abide by the rules of the match as if it was a typical match, us, we’re the champs so we make the rules. So the rules for us are well, there are none. There’s nothing stating we can’t mutilate or maim you and it be held against us for literally destroying you in the ring”.
AJ nods his head and then adds onto what Tama said.
[AJ] “This was something I brought up because we were tired of sitting back and watching everyone else get things handed to them and not have an insurance policy. No, with us, this is our insurance policy that as long as we hold these titles, this is the perks that come with it. And it’s real easy, you agree to it and well then you get a title match but if you don’t, well, you’ll get a title shot if we lose them and by the looks of things, that won’t be for a long time. Now you’re probably saying that isn’t the way to go about it but then again look who the champions were before us. Two guys who slapped tape on their shirt and wrote security on it and became a joke security team for the queen slut I mean the general manager who doesn’t give a damn about what happens to this show but is more concerned about getting into relationships with whoever opens her legs…I mean door.
[Sinclair] “Whoa, hold on AJ, that’s no way to talk about our general manager no matter how many people use her to get their way to the top. She’s not the only one in power even though they don’t do anything worth mentioning. But what is worth mentioning is what we’re going to do tonight and we’ve been talking about it this whole time. While everything is going on around us and within EPW, we need to just focus on all things Dynasty and that’s what we’re going to do. We already have the tag titles but we’re not going to stop there. If it’s you or Tama or Blake holding more than one title, that’s what we’re going to do.
Now that we’ve done our talking, it’s time to step into the ring and show exactly what everyone’s known since we came here. The Dynasty isn’t just a group with a big name that we can’t live up to or some guys that I put together because I have a vendetta against companies who’s wronged me in the past, or even these guys I’ve seen wronged and put together to get back at those suits who said they couldn’t. No, The Dynasty was put together because of their potential and their determination to get the job done no matter what. If it’s anarchy you want, then that’s what we’ll give you. If it’s the wrongs to be made right, that’s what we’ll do. We do what we want, when we want and nobody can stop us. If you think you can, look at what we’ve done in the past and what we’re willing to do.
Now with all that said, it’s time to move on to what’s going to happen tonight in front of a sold out crowd in not just Richmond, Virginia. Yeah it’ll be EPW putting on a live Danger broadcast but it’ll be a memorial show. Now like some memorial shows, there’s of course the 10-bell salute and then they put their picture up on the big screen and play their theme music and throughout the night they’ll have interviews with the roster and staff, but with who The Dynasty had mentioned would be their memorial, things were done differently as far as what they have planned for their entrance. So Paul met with the production team while the trio of Blake, AJ and Tama were in their locker room waiting for the night to begin.
With a knock on the production truck door, Paul stepped inside to what can easily be called the mind of what EPW Danger is. Inside the truck is a swarm of television monitors with multiple camera angles. Paul speaks with the lead production manager and the following is what came from that meeting.
[ENTRANCE FOR THE NIGHT]
The lights in the arena go dark as an image of Dave Kerr dressed in various ring attire through the years begins to play as a slideshow.
[slide 1] [:10] David Kerr
[slide 2] [:10] Amazing Velvet winning his first NWA title
Camera cuts to a live shot inside the sold out arena then cuts to a cameraman at the entrance ramp focused on the stage. The screen splits into three sections as David Kerr is on the far left, Dynamite Dave Deuce is in the middle and The Amazing Velvet is on the far right. As the images appear, the Four minute and Eighteen (4:18) second song of “I Hate Myself for Loving You” blares over the arena. As the song continues, randomly on the screen in sections begins to play short clips of matches that include that character he portrayed. As the video ends, an in memoriam display is shown saying [DAVID ANDREW KERR JUNE 10,1967 - AUGUST 2, 2024]
Seconds after his picture is shown, the song continues and out from the entrance steps Paul Sinclair not in his typical suit. While he is wearing suit pants, he’s wearing a David Kerr shirt with his name in bold letters and the side-by-side images of each of his gimmicks that were seen on the giant screen. Blake, Tama and AJ follow and stand next to Paul as they are also wearing the same shirt but each has a different black arm band. In white bold letters, one reads “DAK”, one reads “VELVET” and another reads “DEUCE”. At ringside are his wife and three kids and as they approach the ring, each member of The Dynasty walk over and gives the family a hug before entering the ring as the music begins to fade away.
